Advanced Features

XML Sitemaps

An xml sitemap allows search engines to easily crawl and index your website with more ease, the file sitemap.xml contains all of the "indexable" pages in your site and contains details on the importance of the page and how regularly it is updated. There are two options for this file within the minisite system.

  1. Dynamically created by the system - minisite will create and maintain a sitemap.xml, updating it and changing priorities when necessary,
  2. Custom sitemap.xml created by you or the minisite team - With this option you will be able to create a completely custom sitemap, setting your own priorities and listing how regularly each page will be updated.

Robots file

Search engine crawlers/ spiders, often referred to as robots, look for a file called robots.txt, this file can contain information that effectively gives instructions to web robots and crawlers on what not to index and what should be indexed. Minisite allows for the creation and maintenance of this robots.txt file.

Q: Why would I not want all my pages to be listed in search engine results, isn't this counter productive?

A: The short answer is no. You may have a page that contains information that is not relevant to your website or a certain page may contain information that you do not deem worthy as being available in the public domain, such as a page for staff to download commonly used forms etc.

NB: robots.txt does work towards not listing pages within it but it is not infallible and should, therefore, not be used for private or sensitive information as pages will still be available whether listed in search engines or not.
